I was introduced to the viol in the early 1980's by my good friend Dave Saphra, an accomplished gambist and double bassist in the New York area. I was awestruck by the flowing curves of the pristine outlines, the gentle arches, and the delicate "C" holes. The combination of beauty and the abundance of music available to these instruments have led me into a love affair for the ages.

Viol making is a living art. My viols are not clones. All the models I use are based on historical instruments. I derive great satisfaction working in the spirit of the old master viol makers, but at a certain point each model becomes my own.

The following page contains a list of instruments I now produce. String length can be varied, within reason, to suit personal taste. The string lengths noted are the most favorable for each model.
